AGV.italo put through its paces on the Rhine-Rhone high-speed line:
successful test campaign thanks to exemplary cooperation between an industrial firm, an infrastructure owner and EURAILTEST.
Between 26 October and the beginning of December 2011, test runs were carried out with an ALSTOM AGV.italo trainset on the Rhine-Rhone high-speed line, a line representing the ultimate in European railway technology and belonging to Réseau Ferré de France (RFF). These tests followed on from an earlier series conducted in Italy with this new ALSTOM transport trainset and were organised by Eurailtest: general organisation of test runs, coordination among the different partners, supply of records of the measurements conducted with respect to current collection, interference currents, acoustics, pressure waves, etc.
Réseau Ferré de France has made the new line available to industry and French and other European railway operators since its inauguration on 8 September 2011 by the President of the French Republic Nicolas Sarkozy, in advance of its official opening to revenue service on 11 December 2011.
It was against this backdrop that RFF was able to offer Alstom the possibility of carrying out a series of intensive tests at 300 km/h with the AGV.italo over a section of the Rhine-Rhone HSL reserved for such tests.
For several weeks, the 5th of the 25 AGV.italo trainsets ordered by the Italian operator NTV was put through its paces during a test programme designed to obtain the final type approval certificates and demonstrate trainset behaviour and reliability in endurance tests in sustained use before its commissioning in revenue service in Italy in early 2012. The trainset submitted to these tests was already in its final revenue service configuration.
In all, during these several weeks of tests, nearly 30 engineers from different branches of Alstom and Eurailtest took part in the proceedings, 19 partners were coordinated by Eurailtest and more than 20,000 km were covered by the AGV.italo trainset.
The data collected via the Traintracer remote maintenance system fitted on the train was transmitted to Alstom’s engineering divisions for analysis and for suggestions as to the final settings and adjustments required.
Réseau Ferré de France was responsible for masterminding the 1st phase of the new Rhine-Rhone HSL between Villers-les-Pots (to the East of Dijon) and Petit-Croix (to the North-East of Belfort) over a distance of 140km. The line, which is symbolic of French railway excellence, has already been used for tests at speeds in excess of 350 km/h.
In the run-up to this test campaign, Eurailtest contributed to the process of commissioning the Rhine-Rhone HSL in service: in partnership with INEXIA, during the line certification phase for speeds up to 350 km/h, Eurailtest supplied a high-speed trainset specially fitted with instruments to collect and record a variety of safety parameters. From the analysis of the data recorded it was then possible to demonstrate that the new infrastructure was fully compliant with the most demanding European safety standards and requirements.

Assistance in the design and validation of beams for supporting train-mounted sensors
When renovating rolling stock or fitting new train-borne equipment (automatic control systems, etc.), manufacturers or operators have occasion to attach sensors or ground-to-train communications under rail vehicles. To do this, it is often necessary to fit beams on the vehicle bogies.
EURAILTEST, yet another customer service innovation
Since the beginning of May 2011, the reports produced by group laboratories have been compiled and sent to customers as computer files with digital signatures to confirm their authenticity.
Gone, therefore, are the days when reports were sent by post and took days to arrive. Now, as soon as a report has been approved and digitally signed, it can be sent straightaway by email. Customers receive a secure document of which they can make as many copies as they want.
Last but not least, keeping official copies is easier, takes less space, costs less and is safe and environmentally friendly.

CSR, one of China’s biggest rolling stock manufacturers , and EURAILTEST have just signed a new contract for the static and fatigue tests to be conducted on bogies for the rolling stock used on Line 13 of the Shanghai metro system. This is the 4th bogie that the Chinese company has chosen to send to EURAILTEST for testing since 2008 and a clear sign of its total satisfaction with EURAILTEST services. The actual tests will be performed by the Railway Test Agency (AEF), one of the laboratories working on behalf of the EIG. Tests will begin in mid-September 2011 and extend over a period of 8 months.

The RATP Test & Measurement Laboratory, focus on the pantograph/OHL interface
One of the major challenges facing the operators and maintainers of urban public transport networks is that of mastering the quality of the interface between the pantograph and the overhead contact line. It is a challenge that remains constant throughout the different phases of the network's life, for any technical incidents arising as a result of problems with the reliability at this interface can have dire consequences for the companies in charge (disruptions to passenger service, loss of customer satisfaction, higher maintenance costs, etc.).
Organised by GART-UTP, this conference is the annual event for the public transport and sustainable travel sector in France.
EURAILTEST, which is a proactive player in moves to develop urban and suburban transport, looks forward to seeing you on the RATP Group stand on 25 and 26 November next.
The event will, in particular, be the opportunity for EURAILTEST to meet with its traditional customers, namely the Transport Organising Authorities and the manufacturers of railway rolling stock and equipment.

Quality of electrical insulation on urban transport networks
EURAILTEST can offer a variety of measurement services to project managers in charge of building tracks in an urban environment to check that the electrical insulation in the track meets the requisite standards as regards stray traction currents, before the line is placed in service. By conducting measurements and ensuring proper compliance with the criteria set out in standard EN 50122-2+A1 and enforced by a decree issued by the French Ministry on 17 May 2001, you should be able largely to alleviate the destructive risks of corrosion in neighbouring embedded installations portions.
